Welcome To Rome, U.S.A.

February 15, 2008

Walker to leave GAO next month

Last year, Walker said the U.S. government is on a “burning platform” of policies that cannot be sustained in the long run. At the time, he drew parallels between the current state of affairs in the U.S. and the Roman Empire in its final years.

Yale economics professor Robert Shiller trotted out Rome too.

Officer Rivieri Fails Again

February 15, 2008

New Charges Against City Cop
2nd Incident Caught on Tape

ABC2 has obtained new video of Baltimore police officer Salvatore Rivieri in action at the Inner Harbor. This time he confronts Billy Friebele, an artist from Washington D.C., who was videotaping at the Harbor last summer.

Friebele told ABC2 he was taping the reactions of passersby to a box he was moving with a remote controlled car. Officer Rivieri is seen on tape kicking the box off of the car and then kicking the car. The officer then orders Friebele to leave the area.

This one isn’t on YouTube, so right now at least, you have to go to a TV news site to see it.

Officer Rivieri Kicking An RC Car

How many more tapes of this guy have yet to appear?

He’s become the poster child of failed policing.

Update: It’s on YouTube! Thanks, David in Comments!

But … Rats Aren’t Humans!

February 15, 2008

WARNING: The site link below has many disturbing photos of ill rats. The squeamish should not go there.

My Aspertame Experiment

When Victoria Inness-Brown contacted me about “explosive information” concerning aspartame (Equal,NutraSweet) the controversial, artificial, chemical sweetener, I didn’t know what to expect. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence of aspartame’s danger to human health (tires have been recalled for less) it remains in 6,000 food, drink and medicinal products.

Who could imagine a private citizen would do an aspartame experiment with 108 rats for 2 years and 8 months?

See, the problem I have with this is that rats are not human beings. Over and over experimental rats have had a variety of diseases — including cancers — cured. And yet those results hardly ever scale up to human beings.

I hate seeing animal experimentation like this. But I also know that I would be dead today if past experiments had not been done.

How To Kill Yourself With One Meal

Oh no no no. I did not buy that. You couldn’t force me to eat it, either.

I want to increase my cholesterol, yes, but not kill myself!

Everex CloudBook Delayed Again?

February 15, 2008

I should have done this earlier today.

As of 6:38PM EST on Friday, February 15 — the day the CloudBook is supposed to be on sale! — the Everex site now reports another delay!

What’s also strange: Last night putting Everex into search at Wal-Mart’s site returned six results. Today, just four. None of them are the CloudBook.

Eli Stone: Why TV Is Dying

February 15, 2008

The above scene happens 25 minutes into the roughly 42-minute program. That’s Eli Stone, the title character, poised on the parapet of his penthouse apartment, awakening from a vision of being on a mountaintop.

I was hoping he’d fall and end the show.

At least that would have been interesting and surprising.

The above line of dialogue takes place less than two minutes into the program. It was already reflecting my sentiments.

This is the title card for the series:

It’s no mistake, I think, that you can see through the letters on the character’s head. It symbolizes just how empty-headed the show is.

Before any fans of this program rush to leave nasty comments, go see what I wrote here. Then get that movie and watch it. But afterwards, don’t blame me if you feel like a sucker for having liked something as shallow, as pitiful, and as empty as Eli Stone.

I really don’t want to waste any more time writing about this thing. It’s just such utter crap.

ABC’s Eli Stone: WTF?

February 15, 2008

That’s not the promo I saw. It was shorter. And I only caught the last bit of it.

Enough to make me wonder what the hell I was seeing.

Come back later. I’m going to watch the first episode.

If you haven’t seen it, and that intriques you, go to ABC’s Full Episode Player and click on Eli Stone in the left column.

Note that if you are outside the U.S., you might not be able to do that. (Turnabout is fair play. I can’t watch anything on BBC’s iPlayer, dammit.)

It’s CloudBook Day! Feel The Regret!

February 15, 2008

See, this is why I do not buy first.

My cholesterol-starved brain probably would have melted and run out of my ears if it faced the problems the experts at Laptop Magazine are having with the Everex CloudBook they just got in. They’re blogging it as it happens.*
