John Gruber on the Multitasking Argument for the iPhone SDK
Heck, I have been using, programming, hacking computers ever since Spectrum ZX came out, and I don’t want to deal with figuring out which rogue app to delete from iPhone to stop a battery drain.
There’s one great comment thread happening over at Ian Betteridge’s blog, Technovia, about Apple prohibiting background processes on the iPhone.
I highlight that quote because it’s true for me too. I’ve used computers since the Apple II+ (at a work environment; my own first computer was a Commodore-64). I’m no programmer, though, just a user.
Last year, I got a used and dead Palm LifeDrive I had restored to life . Because Palm made so many changes to the OS with version 5, I am inhibited from freely installing new applications on it as I did with my prior OS4 device. I absolutely have much better things to do with my time than track down some damned application that’s causing crashes. What used to be a marvelous and fun user experience with Palm devices turned to sheer crap with OS 5.
Apple must have seen that. Apple wants to prevent that. I side with Apple here. Or, to be more to the point, I side with a good user experience.
