BBC: Mad But Glad

March 20, 2008

Via Google Video, a BBC Horizon documentary called Mad But Glad.

Is there really such a thing as the mad genius? Can an illness be both a blessing and a curse?

At seven years old, Nick van Bloss started shaking his head, grinding his teeth and making wild whooping noises. Nick had Tourette’s syndrome. No medical intervention helped him. But one activity stopped it all…

The moment Nick placed his hands on the piano keys his symptoms vanished. By the age of 20, he was an award winning international pianist. He felt sure that his illness had made him the success he was.

But there is a catch. The brain state necessary for his genius can also be dangerously close to mental chaos. Nick’s personal journey reveals how close he came to the edge and how determined he is to triumph.

The Net Is Full Of Tech Fiends

March 20, 2008

Of course, James Kendrick and his Igor (iGor?) Kevin Tofel are the Official Fiends.

But now Michael Connick, who I’ve been crossing paths with for a million years in Internet Time, left a Comment here that pointed to his blog. He’s been using an iPod Touch and just loves it. And he’s been posting to his WordPress blog with itand including an image! He has become the Newest Fiend — or perhaps more appropriate: iFiend!

Click on those links and go to his blog and marvel.

Dune 2.0 is threatened: Berg to direct ‘Dune’ for Paramount

Yeah, right. (And I say 2.0 because who really liked the Sci-Fi version?)

Hey Berg, match this, baby:

Good freakin luck. And that majestic score? Never!

From a MySpace email:

My blog Inside the Hotdog Factory gets tons of hits from idiots searching on “sex with a hotdog” and shit like that. The few seconds they spend on my blog might be the only culture these losers ever get.

My Own Apple Store Testimony

Analyst: Apple appears ‘recession proof’

As you all know, I was at Apple Store Soho yesterday.

The frickin place was packed.

And it wasn’t just freeloaders like me sopping up some free WiFi.

The cashier had at least a line of twenty people. There were people on the floor buying iPhones and iPods.

Upstairs, 90% of the seats in the iTheater were taken by people getting a software tutorial (I think it was mail?).

The Genius Bar was filled in. And lots of people were browsing the software and accessory shelves.

I don’t want to jinx Apple, but things looked just swell yesterday.

But this raised my vibes

Right after I published this post, I received an email with the following six reasons why you should think before you speak. Yes, it doesn’t take much to get me to laugh.

I guess me too.

Mike Cane’s Big-Ass Buy Me This And Buy Me That Wish List!

Because, of course, I am concerned about the happiness of my readers.

Money buys happiness — if you spend on someone else

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on someone else, researchers reported on Thursday.

Spending as little as $5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School found.

(Of course I joke about the Wish List.)
