Truckers Strike 2008: A Salute And Links

A Salute To The American Trucker:

$4-A-Gallon Diesel Puts Rig Owners in Protest Mode

They’re mad as hell and they’re not going to take it anymore. At the start of the month, hundreds of them put the brakes on traffic in Chicago, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on the New Jersey Turnpike and at the Port of Tampa.

Now their sights are set for additional and bigger traffic slowdowns in New York City (April 21) and Washington, D.C. (April 28) – all leading to a possible national shutdown on May 1.

They are the nation’s independent long-haul truckers, small business persons whose livelihood is being crushed by $4-per-gallon diesel fuel.

Lincoln truckers may join D.C. rally

LINCOLN, Maine – At least 50 Maine trucks will roll on Washington, D.C., April 28 as part of a national rally to protest record diesel prices that many Mainers say are crushing the state’s forest products and hauling industries.

Belinda Raymond, organizer and co-founder of the Coalition to Lower Fuel Prices, a grassroots organization formed last fall held a rally at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Sunday, drawing more than 150 people.

“We are looking at going to Washington with at least 50 trucks,” Raymond, of Kingman, said Sunday. “We would like to get 100.”

About 15 truckers at Sunday’s meeting signed their trucks up for the rally, Raymond said. With trucking companies already committed to the roll on Washington, 50 is a minimal number.

More convoys, shutdowns planned by truckers to protest high diesel prices

Across the country, truckers are uniting to make their voices heard by organizing shutdowns, rallies and convoys aimed at garnering national mainstream attention to soaring fuel prices and low freight rates.

In Indiana, truckers are planning to convoy to the Capitol in Indianapolis on April 18 to protest high diesel prices and get politicians’ attention.

The organizers of the truck convoy that circled around the Capitol building in Harrisburg, PA, on March 31, have decided to stage another convoy on Monday, April 28 – this time to Washington, DC – to protest high fuel prices.
