JK on the Run: The Secret Transcript!

May 7, 2008

This should prove to everyone once and for all that James Kendrick and his evil minion Kevin Tofel must be stopped!

Now!

They are terrorizing this nation. They are subverting the domestic tranquility of millions of men by hypnotizing them into buying One More Thing.

Wives are going unclothed! Children are going unfed!

And I — yes, I! — am being personally persecuted by the Treacherous Two!

I ran their latest video through some stolen as yet unreleased software and extracted from it the secret transcript within!

After viewing this, all of you will know who to call!

Fienditry001
Kendrick: Hey, Cane! Look at what I have!

Tofel: Heh-heh-heh!

Fienditry005
Kendrick: Hold it close to the screen! Taunt him! Taunt him!!!
Tofel: Squeeeeee!

Fienditry006
Kendrick: Look, Cane! It’s the new Opera! And it’s like the iPhone!
Tofel: Oh my god! Master, you are so eeeevil!

Fienditry007
Kendrick: You’ll learn, Kevin, how to make Cane feel this small!
Tofel: Does Cane own a gun?

Fienditry008
Kendrick: Who cares!?! We’re Fiends!
Tofel: Yeah, that’s right! Heh-heh-heh!

New Hiroshima Photos

May 7, 2008

Update May 15 2008: Move along. Photos are in doubt.

Photos of Hiroshima from the Robert L. Capp Collection

The Robert L. Capp collection at the Hoover Institution Archives contains ten never-before-published photographs illustrating the immediate aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing. These photographs, taken by an unknown Japanese photographer, were found in 1945 among rolls of undeveloped film in a cave outside Hiroshima by U.S. serviceman Robert L. Capp, who was attached to the occupation forces. Unlike most photos of the Hiroshima bombing, these dramatically convey the human as well as material destruction unleashed by the atomic bomb. Mr. Capp donated them to the Hoover Archives in 1998 with the provision that they not be reproduced until 2008. Three of these photographs are reproduced in Atomic Tragedy with the permission of the Capp family. Now that the restriction is no longer in force, the entire set is available below. Please contact Sean L. Malloy (smalloy@ucmerced.edu) if you have any information that might help identify the original photographer.

What Japan Does To Movie Titles

May 7, 2008

Movie titles in Japan: Jack, we understand your frustration

The way foreign movies are retitled in Japan defies logic. I have spoken with staff at movie distribution companies about this over the years. It all comes down to how the title sounds and what feeling it connotes, say marketing staff. But there never has been any pattern, as a visit to a DVD rental shop will show. For example, if you want to rent “An Officer and a Gentleman,” you’ll have to ask for “Ai to Seishun no Tabidachi” (A Journey of Love and Youth). Curiously, the word “ai” (love) turns up in a lot of titles, where it’s not mentioned in the originals – “Renai shosetsuka” (Romance Writer) for Nicholson’s own “As Good as It Gets” is one of a zillion examples.

The list is endless. For some titles, the “cute” factor is important: Director Garry Marshall’s films usually have the katakana for “pretty” in them because of the success of “Pretty Woman;” Reese Witherspoon’s “Legally Blonde” became “Cutie Blonde,” while “Miss Congeniality” is “Dangerous Beauty.” Anything with Steven Seagal (yes, he’s still churning out cookie cutter action films) has to have the word “yosai” (fortress) in the title, probably because of the success of his first “Under Siege” film. I tried for years to find out why Frank Capra’s 1936 classic “Mr Deeds Goes to Town” was retitled “Opera Hat,” but apparently there is no one alive who remembers. Maybe some titles defy translation. The best Japan could do with “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” was “Austin Powers Deluxe.”

Some of these are just so funny.

New York City: Anti-American

What a wretched hell-hole this area is turning into.

Finally clearing out a backlog of MySpace Bulletins (28 pages!), I only learned about this today:

NEW YORK CITY CANCELS DEMONSTRATION ON THE HEELS OF DC CONVOY
(unfortunately, I don’t have and can’t find a link for that!)

Mike (JB) Schaffner, of www. theamericandriver. com, today announced that New York City has effectively cancelled the convoy in Manhattan scheduled for May 1, 2008.

Spokesman Mike (JB) Schaffner said he was disappointed. “We were set to perform a peaceful demonstration to point out the frustration that working class America is feeling,” he said. “First they approved us. Then they changed our permits for no more than 35 vehicles in the convoy. Now they’ve placed so many unreasonable conditions on the event that it makes it nearly impossible. We’re asking the government of the great state of New York to address this, and the reasons why our freedoms to speak and peacefully assemble are being crushed.”

Brian Osborne, owner of B L Osborne Transport, said, “they’ve effectively shut us down all together.”

Brian Osborne was a major force in the organization of the convoy. “They didn’t give us a reason, but we suspect that they fear fallout after the phenomenal turnout in DC on April 28th. I don’t think Bloomberg wants that much attention. They told us they would set up barricades and roadblocks to stop trucks from coming in.”

Emphasis added by me.

Billionaire Bloomberg is only interested in one thing: Billionaire Bloomberg.

I bet he doesn’t even know the price of diesel fuel in his own city.

It’s four dollars and sixty-nine cents a gallon, you rich eejit!

God bless the American trucker!

Ralph Nader – Why Democrats Lose

Ralph Nader responds to a man who accuses Nader of costing Al Gore the election in 2000, and for every bad thing that’s happened ever since – including the Iraq War!

If you didn’t watch that, do so! Look at how Nader keeps his cool.

Contrast that with the grasping, greedy, pandering Big Three Corporate Candidates.

Nader’s the true American.

When I vote for him in November, I will come out of that voting booth feeling clean and knowing I’ve accomplished something to change this country for the better.

What about you?

It’s been way too long since I’ve been able to post about the truckers.

Truck drivers face new threat due to diesel fuel prices – May 6th, 2008

Gas prices are on the rise again which is a disturbing sight for drivers in St. Louis. On Tuesday, prices at many stations across St. Louis spiked another 15 to 20 cents a gallon to about $3.69. The price of diesel is even higher at more than $4 a gallon.

This is a news report video I can’t embed.

It reports on how truckers are being ripped off by others toting electric siphons(!). They can steal over a hundred gallons of diesel fuel in less time than it takes to use a restroom!

One detail: It also reports diesel fuel rising in that local area to over $4.00/gallon. Here in NYC, diesel has been $4.69/gallon for at least the past month!

God bless the American trucker!

Oil jumps over $123 on drop in diesel, heating oil supplies

NEW YORK (AP) – Oil futures rose to a new record above $123 a barrel Wednesday after the Energy Department reported an unexpected drop in diesel and heating oil supplies last week. At the pump, gas prices rose for the first time since last week.

Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose to a new record of $123.56 in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange before retreating slightly to trade up $1.50 at $123.34 a barrel.

Emphasis added by me.

If I’ve searched my own blog correctly, the first time I noted a per-barrel price of oil was in When Will It Sink In That We’re Sunk?, published March 3, 2008.

The price then? A “whopping” $103.95!

That’s right. It was news when oil crossed the $100/barrel threshold!

Also significant there:

For its part, the Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration’s latest prediction is that oil will average $86 a barrel in 2008, up 19 percent from 2007, when oil averaged $72 a barrel.

Are you getting scared yet?
