Why that date? I couldn’t see anything that stood out at wikipedia.

This part of the filing intrigues me:

computer software for facilitating publication of information to a website.

Blogging software?

Still, why that date? Could it have something to do with the original Apple I computer, which went on sale in July 1976?

  1. ramin Says:

July 17th was the static date shown on the early versions of iCal. Presumably, it’s the date the original iCal program was introduced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2002/jul/17ical.html).

After much complaining, the icon behavior was changed so it showed the current date. It’s funny that they trademarked the fixed July 17th icon only to abandon it later for a dynamic one. Wonder if they resubmitted the trademark…

Apple has over *800* trademarks. Most of them are dead. Some are graphics/symbols which can’t be searched for as words. They’ve submitted a *ton* of applications for the Apple logo covering just about everything from keychains to restaurant services(!).

I stuck to looking for recent ones I’d never seen before.

  3. I wonder if there’s some limit on the amount of trademarks you can have. Getting 800 trademark requests must seem like spam after a while to the USPTO.

  4. When are we going to reform the ridiculous trademark and copyright laws? Free Mickey!

That’s pretty weird, I didn’t even know that companies could try to trademark specific dates.

Please! Apple has few compared to others. Drug companies alone have *thousands*. I’m sure Proctor & Gamble also has thousands.

Look at the other post. Apple also trademarked the @ symbol and the letter A. Context is the thing when it comes to trademarks. That’s also why Apple filed for virtually all uses of its corporate logo, that stylized apple. BTW, they now also own two apple designs from Apple Records.
