ULCPC News: Razorbook 400, MSI Wind

June 18, 2008

I really wasn’t going to post more, but GottaBeMobile has a little video preview about that odd tiny Razorbook 400 that I’ve only seen mentioned at the Laptop magazine blog.

It intrigues me due to its limitations. No built-in Wi-Fi. That would equal distraction-free writing. I couldn’t “take a short break” from writing, pop onto the Net, and eighteen jillion hours later, lose the impetus to actually write.

I look forward to GottaBeMobile’s additional coverage, especially about its teeny keyboard.

The one bit of MSI Wind news I have comes from nearly-local retailer RK Computers, one of two NY-area retailers listed at the MSI Mobile site.

I asked them:

You are listed by MSI as one of 2 sellers in NY. Will you be carrying the MSI Wind?

And they replied:

When released, the eta is end of this month, maybe middle of next.

Hmmm … middle of July?

Stop Trying To Flatter Me

June 18, 2008

I can tell when you’re stuffing the ballot box to cheer me up.

The day will come when all ten with be Chronicles Of Depression 2.0.

What? You think that will make me happy?

Yesterday’s complaint about this.

You’ve Been Google-Burgled!

The Google Earth gatecrashers who take uninvited dips in home-owners’ swimming pools

Would-be revellers are using satellite images on the internet to find houses with swimming pools – and then turning up uninvited for an impromptu dip.

The craze involves using the Google Earth programme, which provides high-quality aerial photos of Britain and other countries.

Once a target is chosen, the organisers use social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo to arrange to meet, say police.

Here is your dark future.

Google Earth goes to real-time live satellite images. Better than what was dramatized in Patriot Games.

And that nifty phone you have with Google’s Android OS? The one with the GPS built-in?

It’s tied into Google Real-Time Live Earth.

So your friends can find you.

But so can all the villains.

Thief One: Oi! That geek asshole finally left his crib.

Thief Two: Yeah. Keep tracking that eejit. Call me if he comes back while I’m in his place.

Thief One: Don’t forget that fly PC we saw delivered yesterday!

Thief Two: Damn straight I won’t!

You don’t think it will happen?

Wait.

Meantime, there’s a good business to be had making camouflage pool covers …

MySpace Redesigned

June 18, 2008

Not all of it.

But they did enough so now I can actually find the frikkin videos on it.

I think.

Anyway, I found something else too: free movie screenings!

Click = big

There is, of course, a catch to it. I’d have move out two of my four Top Friends to promote the sponsor and the movie. I don’t know for how long, though.

Plus, there’s no tickets. You show up and … um … hope.

This particular movie doesn’t really interest me.

And given the demographic MySpace serves, I doubt most of them will interest me.

However, there’s always a chance that The Dark Knight (which was the sign-in sponsor) might pop up for free!

Back, you freebie-sucking heathen dogs! I saw it first!

Memphis Police Brutality

June 18, 2008

Video shows police beating at 201 Poplar

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) -Video obtained by Action News 5 shows a Memphis police officer beating a suspect at 201 Poplar in an apparent case of police brutality.

The video, recorded February 12th, shows Duanna Johnson in the booking area at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center after an arrest for prostitution. The tape clearly shows a Memphis police officer walk over to Johnson – a transsexual – and hit her in the face several times.

“Actually he was trying to get me to come over to where he was, and I responded by telling him that wasn’t my name – that my mother didn’t name me a ‘faggot’ or a ‘he-she,’ so he got upset and approached me. And that’s when it started,” Johnson said.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Paulson & Co. Says Writedowns May Reach $1.3 Trillion (Update3)

June 18 (Bloomberg) — John Paulson, founder of the hedge fund company Paulson & Co., said global writedowns and losses from the credit crisis may reach $1.3 trillion, exceeding the International Monetary Fund’s $945 billion estimate.

“We’re only about a third of the way through the writedowns,” Paulson, 52, told the GAIM International hedge fund conference in Monaco today. “There are a lot of problems out there and it will continue to be felt through the year. We don’t see any signs of stabilizing.'”

Paulson, whose New York-based company manages about $33 billion, made bets last year that subprime-mortgage debt would fall after he noticed “bubble like” prices. His Paulson Partners fund rose 18 percent a year since it started in 1994, and his main subprime-debt fund rose 591 percent last year. Banks and securities firm worldwide posted more than $395 billion in losses and writedowns since the subprime crisis started last year.

Emphasis added by me.

Anyone reading that who’s shocked by a trillion-dollar figure must be new here.

Ralph Nader In NYC Tonight, June 18, 2008

All that follows is a quote (until I say it’s not):

Nader Launches New York Ballot Drive with Rally and News Conference

NADER TO LAUNCH PETITION DRIVE FOR NEW YORK BALLOT LINE WITH CAMPAIGN RALLY, NEWS CONFERENCE, IN NYC, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18

Independent Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader will kick off the Nader/Gonzalez New York ballot drive Wednesday, June 18, with a news conference at 6:30 p.m. and a rally at 7:30 p.m., at the Peter Norton Symphony Space, Peter Jay Sharp Theater, 2537 Broadway at 95th St.

In a major campaign policy speech, Mr. Nader will elaborate details of his broad, majoritarian platform, draw a sharp contrast with the corporate-sponsored Democratic and Republican party candidates, and connect the dots between pressing national and New York City problems and solutions. The speech will also spotlight examples of vitally important issues favored by New Yorkers and all Americans, championed by the Nader/Gonzalez Campaign, yet opposed by Obama and McCain.

While Mr. Nader calls for a comprehensive, negotiated military and corporate withdrawal from Iraq, McCain favors “staying the course” indefinitely, and Obama’s plan leaves 175,000 to 220,000 soldiers and contractors in Iraq, threatens to further militarize the U.S. approach to the Middle-East by putting combat forces in Kuwait and rattling the sabers vis-a-vis Iran. Nader/Gonzalez favors reversing U.S. Middle East policy and stands with the majority of Jewish Americans and Arab Americans which polls repeatedly show support a two-state solution–Israel and Palestine–as a way for peace in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the Iraq war and the bloated, wasteful military budget are bankrupting our country’s future and robbing cities like New York of the funds necessary for repairing or expanding clinics, schools, subway systems, bridges, sewer and drinking water systems and other crumbling infrastructure. Mr. Nader would turn those wasted dollars back toward meeting domestic challenges, like: providing single payer Canadian-style, private delivery, free choice of doctor and hospital, public health insurance that covers all Americans; repairing failing public works and facilities; a living wage and repeal of the anti-union Taft-Hartley Act; a no-nuke, solar-based energy policy supported by renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient sources; an end to the corporate welfare and the corporate crime wave that has resulted in millions losing pensions, savings and jobs and squandered tax dollars.

The city crumbles for lack of funding, and the Mayor promotes raising property taxes, the New York Yankees asks for more hundreds of millions in tax-exempt financing for their Stadium project, and the neighborhood wonders about replacements for its treasured uprooted parkland.

Mr. Nader will call for an end to the tax abatements for corporate fat cats on Wall Street, like Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs and others, the off-shoring of jobs to places like China that send us back toxic, faulty products in return.

A Democratic Congress and Republican White House have given American working families oil price speculation and price gouging, Bear Stearns-style bailouts with your tax dollars and a corporate crime wave the magnitude of which hasn’t been seen in our county’s history. The Nader/Gonzalez Campaign would vigorously crack down on the corporate fraud, waste and abuse and the government policies that facilitate such lawlessness.

— end of quoting.

Emphasis added by me up there in the first paragraph.

The Nader team should adjust their emailing schedule. I got this about 3PM today. Three and a half hour’s notice is no damned good for me. I need at least two day’s notice to clear the decks to be somewhere.

Democracy Now! will be covering this, so I’ll have to be content with that video. And whatever else pops up on YouTube.

Ralph Nader On Democracy Now!

June 18, 2008

So, to sum it up, really, our campaign is to subordinate corporate power to the sovereignty of the people. Why is that a radical notion? Doesn’t the Constitution start with “We the people”?

The online video is here. (Note that link is probably valid only today, on June 18, 2008; I will see if I can update it. Update: Link updated.) Nader begins at about 47:50 (the timer goes backwards to 00:00).

There’s a transcript to read here.

Ralph Nader will be in New York City this evening. That deserves its own post.

Meanwhile, if you’re still going to vote for one of the two Dominant Corporate Parties but don’t feel good about that, Nader brought up a site called Vote Pact:

Go there to save your soul. And to save America!

I. Want. This. Book!

June 18, 2008

John Scalzi, the Man Who Has Too Much Damn Fun In His Life, is going to do the above book.

He’s also holding a contest related to it.

Believe it or not, I actually got all a-scared of that prospect. Like a little girl! (See Comment 2!)

But Scalzi is a Manly Man and informed me I should try to gut him. (See Comment 3.)

I don’t think I can do that to someone I like. I save my ferocity for the bastards I hate.

I guess I’ll have to be content buying the book!

I am FAIL!
