Globalizing Copyediting

OC Register to outsource some editing to India

An Indian company will take over copy editing duties for some stories published in The Orange County Register and will handle page layout for a community newspaper at the company that owns the Pulitzer Prize-winning daily, the newspaper confirmed Tuesday.

Orange County Register Communications Inc. will begin a one-month trial with Mindworks Global Media at the end of June, said John Fabris, a deputy editor at the Register.

Mindworks’ Web site says the company is based outside New Delhi and provides “high-quality editorial and design services to global media firms … using top-end journalistic and design talent in India.”

Professional writers who for whatever reason eventually decide to bypass entrenched corporate print publishers and go to self-published ebooks are still going to require the skills of professional copyeditors and proofreaders.

I never imagined such services could be outsourced to India. I always envisioned domestic professionals.

Update: To prove my point, there was a bad typo in there. Fixed.

Looks like I better brush up on my Hindi and learn to cook with curry. In the mean time, I’ll hang out at http://www.bentpage.wordpress.com.

I know I’m a little late chiming in, but there’s a site called guru.com for people looking to hire all sorts of freelance media people, and when I was checking it out, it felt like half the people (or more) vying for jobs were in India.

    Hi Mike,
Since it is never too late …

Outsourcing editing to India doesn’t surprise me at all. Sony produced a youtube video called Did You Know? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o71fs4P2Dq0). In that Video they said “25% of India’s population with the highest IQ is greater than the total pop. of the US. In other words, India has more honors kids than America has kids!

I have worked in NY CPA firms for many years and, the trend has been to have client tax returns prepared in India. Despite the controversy over confidentiality, it seems to be a done deal with many CPA firms following suit.

    Who would of thunk it?

I don’t doubt that India has some really brilliant people, BUT . . .

The statement above is simply saying that 25% of India’s 1.24 million population is a number greater than U.S.’s 310 million.

That is simply a math ratio of population that has no signaficance beyond that simple ratio. Stating the 25% smartest people in india is the same exact number as saying 25% of the total population. Saying 25% tallest, 25% shortest, 25% with the biggest feet: they are the same exact number.

@Barbara: Is this the video you meant?
