Jaw Drop Drool Alert: Mac OS X On Asus EeePC 1000H!

Asus eee pc 1000h OSX Kalyway 10.5.2

All I kept saying after the bootup was GTFOH!!! That wee Asus EeePC 1000H puts my frikkin desktop running Windows XP to shame! The speed — that speed!!!! GTFOH!!

The resolution in that YouTube video is reported to be 800 x 600. But someone has succeeded in getting 1024 x 600!

And here it is, in video too:

Asus eee pc 1000h OSX MSIWINDOSX86 10.5.4

That … speed!!!

The only issue — and it’s the same on the MSI Wind — is a problem with lack of sound. If more people jump on this problem, maybe it can be solved for everyone!

This is the forum thread to read for instructions.

As for me, alas, I cannot use the Asus EeePC 1000H due to its keyboard. If you can, good luck, and leave a Comment if you’ve installed Mac OS X — to stoke my envy!

The MSI Wind has sound playing through the speakers, but the mic in and line out plugs don’t work.

The way I understand it the Eee 1000 doesn’t have sound at all. Yet.

It really is an awesome macbook air alternative – obviously not the same experience, but close enough for a fraction of the price.

Beats the hell out of my Win XP desktop, from what I see in the vids!

Should note that with the MSI Wind, some people have successfully used USB plug-in audio thingies to get headphone sound.

Reminds me of an old saying: “Why does a dog lick it’s crotch?” Answer: Because it can. (Not because it should)
You know, the umteen hours spend jacking around with a sub-standard entry-level pile of crap PC to get it to run OS X would more than be worth the cost of a basic Mac Mini.
And the damned sound works on it RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! Imagine that.

Reminds me of the old saying, “why does L Kern lick his crotch? Because he likes the taste of dick.” The point is that apple is ignoring a very large segment of the computing population with their current offerings. Once upon a time you could buy a fairly inexpensive, light, and capable laptop from Apple, but those days are long past. If you think the Air accounts for filling this niche, than you are sorely mistaken because some of us need more than one usb port and user replaceable batteries to get the job done (and at a third the cost, imagine that?).

@Mosamjc: I agree a bit. We have yet to see how long the lifespan of these subnotes are yet. Apple could know something about the quality of the components that we don’t. I don’t think it’s just for the sake of style Asus is coming out with more expensive models. I’d like to see a 10″-inch Mac OS X subnote myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jobs has contempt for that form factor. Plus, I expect the margins on these current subotes are so thin you could cut yourself with them.

You’re probably right, but it still doesn’t do anything for replacing my current aluminum powerbook g4 12 inch that is horribly underpowered but still serves it’s purpose better than a current mac book offering. In a bit of good news, it appears the internal speakers of the MSI wind are working under OS X now (I know this isn’t new news), which is making it an appealing option right now for a cheap new ultraportable chimera.

    >>>I know this isn’t new news

It was news to me, so thanks for that! It’s been weeks since I’ve been able to keep up with tech developments.

Glad I could help in my own little way. Enjoy your blog–keep up the good work.
